I just received a similar message while testing version 8.02, but I also received a similar message with 8.00. Here is a copy of the exact message:
The following error occurred in FormMail : Failed to open template "/fmtemplates/shplain.txt" : failed to open stream: Operation not permitted. So I am not sure if it is the formmail.php.

Could this be related to the Permissions that are set on the new "fmtemplates" that I created to hold the shplain.txt? Currently the directory permissions are set for rwx r-x r-x.

I am a NewBie to Linux so any help with the Permission settings via SSH would be greatly appreciated.

BTW... This is the script error on the 8.00 version:
The following error occurred in FormMail : Failed to open template "../fmtemplates/shplain.txt" : failed to open stream: Operation not permitted

The only difference in the $TEMPLATEDIR settings where I used ../ instead of /. Should I be using the \ on the Linux server. The http://www.tectite.com/fmdoc/templatedir.php confused me as to the direction of the slash Windows vs Linux.

I am still getting error messages when trying to generate data in the plain.txt template; shplain.txt is my Template for Plain Emails. I have read through many of the threads, the How To Guide, etc. I have included the FULL PATH at one point, then attempted to use $REAL_DOCUMENT_ROOT/fmtemplates. I have set the permissions on the fmtemplates directory and the actual file (shplain.txt) to rwx, r-x, r-x.

Here is the error message that I recieved by using the full path: The following error occurred in FormMail : Failed to open template "/var/www/vhosts/ * .com/fmtemplates/shplain.txt" : failed to open stream: Operation not permitted (Note * is in place of the domain)

Here is the latest error message that I recieved by using $REAL_DOCUMENT_ROOT/fmtemplates: The following error occurred in FormMail : Failed to open template "/var/www/fmtemplates/shplain.txt" : failed to open stream: Operation not permitted

Could this be a server issue? Please help I have been hacking at this for over 6 hours. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

BTW.. The straight formmail.php works without a hitch, but as you know the data is not pleasing to the eye.

I figured it out. My fmtemplates directory was not created at the site root, but somewhere in the stratosphere. I made new directory at a different level and it functions seamlessly.
