Default How to collect IP address with webform?

Hi, I want to be able to collect the IP address when someone completes a web form. Does anyone know how to do this?

My hope is that I should be able to block spammers IP's from making more form submissions. I am interested to hear your comments.

    yep, u can do this:
    http://www.tectite.com/fmhowto/derived.php

however ip block lists are a bad idea coz ip addresses change and wot criteria will u use to unblock an ip address in the future?

tectite has strong anti spam features - why not use them first?

Many thanks... i got the code to collect the IP address.

I find that i get a few spammers who routinely spam my webforms. If i block their IP's it should slow down the spam. Do i want them as customers? It is highly unlikely they would ever be a customer anyway... hmmmm do more than one person share the same IP address? you know with dynamic generated IP address's?

I am curious about the other anti spam features... do you mean captcha? I have avoided captcha because it makes the webform look a bit ugly.

behind a firewall, e.g. inside a business, many (possibly hundreds) of people share the one ip address u see

also, when u disconnect from ur ISP and reconnect, u get a new ip address.

in effect, u could block innocent people and would never know (of course the chances are very low, but it's possible)

to fight specific types of spam u need to analyse it a bit.

without captcha, u can do a lot and possibly block it all

if it's autoamted spam, then consider Reverse Captcha

go to this page on tectite's site:read each of the settings that start with ATTACK_DETECTION

a lot are on by default, but some need u to consider wot u want to allow and/or block

most spam has URLs in it, so ATTACK_DETECTION_MANY_URLS is a good one to use

Hi, This is good information... many thanks...the attack detection looks interesting... i have a webform on most pages for people to send an inquiry from...

however on my link exchange pages i need to allow people to send me a url in their page description...

i guess i could run two versions of formmail? This would make it easy to block the url submissions from the inquiry webforms and allow the url's on the link exchange pages... this would reduce the amount of spam...

... as an option i wonder if there is a way to add code to the webform fields to detect url's and then block the send?
